Espresso Martini is one of the most iconic and beloved cocktails among coffee and mixology enthusiasts. Born in the 1980s to fulfill a request for a drink that could both "wake you up and shake you up," it has since become a timeless classic in bars worldwide. On Espresso Martini Day, let's dive into its fascinating history and uncover the secrets to crafting the perfect one. Cheers!

The History of Espresso Martini

This cocktail was invented in the late 1980s by the famous London barman Dick Bradsell, who masterfully blended espresso, vodka and coffee liqueur. The idea was for an energizing drink, perfect for starting or ending an evening on a high note in style.

How to prepare a perfect Espresso Martini

For a perfectly balanced and creamy Espresso Martini, the key is to start with a high-quality espresso, ideally brewed with a premium espresso machine. Here are the essential ingredients:

  • 40 ml vodka
  • 30 ml of coffee liqueur (such as Kahlúa or Tia Maria)
  • 30 ml freshly brewed espresso
  • 5 ml sugar syrup (optional, for a sweeter touch)
  • Ice
  • 3 coffee beans for decoration

Preparation

  1. Brew a shot of espresso and let it cool slightly.
  2. Fill a shaker with ice, add the vodka, coffee liqueur, espresso and sugar syrup.
  3. Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds to obtain a velvety cream.
  4. Strain into a well-chilled Martini glass and garnish with three coffee beans.

Tips for a perfect Espresso Martini

Use freshly ground, high-quality coffee to enhance the flavor and aroma of your Espresso Martini. For this recipe, we recommend 100% Arabica beans from Laboratorio di Torrefazione Giamaica Caffè for a rich and refined taste.

The key to achieving a thick, creamy foam is to shake vigorously, ensuring plenty of air is incorporated into the mix.

Celebrate Espresso Martini Day by making this irresistible cocktail and share it with friends!
