AeroPress mania: the complete guide to coffee brewing
Among the various tools for making a good cup of coffee, AeroPress is certainly one of the most versatile and easy to use everywhere.
AeroPress belongs to the large filter coffee family and combines the ease of use of a moka with the precision of an espresso machine, resulting in a cup with an intense, clean flavor.
With its compact and lightweight design, it is the ideal travel buddy for those who love travelling and want to brew high-quality coffee wherever they are.
Besides comfort, AeroPress is also known for its versatility: you can brew espresso-type coffee, americano, pour-over, or even cold-brew.
In the package you will find the plastic chamber where the brewing takes place, the plunger with the rubber seal, and the cap with paper micro-filters. In addition, there are also a scoop and a plastic stirrer useful during preparation.
Let's now look at the complete guide to brewing a great cup of pour-over coffee with AeroPress.
TOOLS NEEDED
- Electric kettle
- Water
- Coffee beans
- Coffee grinder for a medium-fine grind
- Scale
- Obviously AeroPress
- Your favorite mug
PREPARATION
Heat about 200 ml of water to 85 °C or 185 °F.
With an electric kettle like Fellow Stagg Ekg you can have precise temperature control.
Place a filter inside the cap and pour some hot water over it to preheat it and remove the papery taste. The more meticulous ones also preheat the cup.
Next, twist the filter cap into the chamber and place everything directly on top of your favorite mug.
COFFEE
To keep a balanced ratio of water to coffee, for 200 ml of water, grind about 15 grams of coffee with a medium-fine grind, perfect for best enhancing the flavors.
Pour the ground coffee into the chamber.
If you are brewing coffee on the go and do not have a scale handy, use the included scoop: it holds 15 grams of coffee when filled completely.
Before proceeding to the next step, shake the chamber slightly to level out the freshly ground coffee.
POUR THE WATER
Pour water up to level 4, which corresponds to about 200 ml.
With the Fellow Stagg Ekg electric kettle, you can wet all the coffee evenly.
INFUSION
Once the hot water meets the ground coffee, the brewing process begins where all the aromas we love so much about coffee are released.
After pouring all the water, you can use the stirrer to gently stir for 10 seconds and distribute the water as evenly as possible.
Then insert the plunger into the chamber for about 1 cm and let it sit for 30 seconds.
EXTRACTION
After the infusion moment, the actual extraction process with AeroPress begins. This consists of slowly pressing the plunger down while applying constant pressure. It is normal to feel some resistance when you push the plunger down. However, if you do feel too much resistance, to the point where it is difficult to push down, then the grind is too fine.
Push the plunger down slowly; the process should take about 20 seconds.
Once all the coffee has been extracted, it is time to remove AeroPress from the mug. Remove the filter cap and puh the plunger through until you hear a “pop” sound and the coffee grounds pop out.
Besides the comfort of being able to brew coffee anywhere, AeroPress is also very easy to clean and immediately ready for the next use.
The result is an aromatic, balanced and clean coffee. Just because of its ability to bring out all the shades of the beans, AeroPress is the right method if you have carefully chosen your coffee and want to fully feel all its aromas.
EXTRA TIPS
- Hold your mug and AeroPress chamber securely with one hand while pressing the plunger vertically down with your other hand
- When pouring water over the ground coffee, a small amount of drip through the filter is normal. If there is excessive drip through, use a finer grind
